Melanin ordeals.
Why do we desperately try to scrub off the Melanin from our skin with Harmful chemicals
Whitening creams
Cosmetic procedures
To cure it like it's a cursed disease?
Why do we use makeup
To lighten complexion ,
Change skin tone,
Try to look fairer
And not simply enhance features,
Embracing the tan ?
Why do we dread, even in moments of carefree and enjoyment,
The sunburn
The scrutinising eyes
The disapproving glance
That befalls on our abundant supply of melanin?
Why is fairness
An obsession,
A standard of beauty,
A shameful comparison
Resulting in so of us feeling complexed
About the shade of our skin?
Why do these statements have to be emphasized:
"Black is beautiful"
"Colour does not matter"
"Dark, but nice features."
Like it's some very generous gesture
Or chants that require memorization!
How many generations have gone by believing that melanin:
Which is a God given blessing,
Is infact the enemy of their beauty?
How many more generations to come before we are freed entirely from this stigma,
From this menace of melanin ordeals?
